Who will stop the rain?

Spring has come and gone like a pressure fermented lager…and it’s still raining. Fortunately, RIBS had a number of events to help us shake off the rainy season.

We started with an event we aptly call ‘April Sours’. This year’s event was hosted at member (and officially unofficial Quartermaster) Ed’s house. April Sours is part beer share, part pot luck, part group brew and all fun. It predictably rained so we brewed under the tents and in the garage. A total of 7 batches were brewed by club members and an untold number of sour beers were appreciated.

The second big event of the spring is the Stein Beer brew session which also conveniently fell around AHA’s Big brew day. Never heard of ‘steinbeer’ you say?? Well you’re in for a treat, Steinbeer is a very old way of brewing beer back before metal containers were affordable or the standard. To boil the wort they would put rocks in that had been super heated in a furnace. This helped to produce a very unique flavor by helping to caramelize some of the sugars in the wort. Club member Dan, was the gracious host and only one crazy enough for this event. Fortunately, he’s an old hand at this and has done it yearly for quite some time.
