Gluten-free beer

By | July 11, 2012

Gluten-free for some is a diet fad, for others it is an a way of life. In the beer world its hard to make a good beer with out gluten, especially when dealing with wheat and barely. Celiac disease hits close to home since my sister has had it her whole life, and I personally know several others that actually have a gluten allergy and not a sensitivity as well.

The good thing is as a home brewer you are not limited to what you can use to brew with like you would have been years back. Everything from mead, ciders, and you can even get GF extracts, while you do have to be careful because some yeasts are not actually GF (yeast might be but the solution they are packed with normally isn’t).

I don’t normally go out of my way to research gluten free stuff, some times I stumble across interesting articles. This write up about gluten free beer caught my eye and I thought I would share it, since I know that find GF beers are a bit difficult to find. The Gluten Dude website had a nice write up on the types of GF beers that are in the market and if they are worth a try. A few beers listed:

  • Magners
  • Glutenator
  • Daura
  • New Planet
  • Dogfish Heads Tweason‘ale
  • New Grist

A few of us at RIBS have taken an interest to GF brewing so expect some recipes to pop up from time to time, along with some GF brewing tips. As always if you have a recipe feel free to share with us.

Cheers!
